Sohrnaz: Activation
2023
World Building & Live Performance
JAX Shono Studio, Riyadh
Sohrnaz is a semi-fictional character developed through Baluchi’s practice of tracing her Baluchi heritage. A figure who emerges from ancestral memory and evolves through contact with other cultures, absorbing and transforming as she goes. Her wardrobe, jewelry, patterns, and movement vocabulary are rooted in Balochi traditional dress but follow a nomadic logic: contact, adaptation, continual reconfiguration.
Developed during the INTERMIX Residency in Riyadh, this presentation stages the making of Sohrnaz: the fashioning of her costume, digital renderings of her world, and a live performance marking her activation. The work treats world-building as a legitimate form of cultural research, and the fictional character as a vehicle for exploring questions of heritage, displacement, and the continuous reinvention of home. Sohrnaz is intended to expand into an interactive digital experience and a feature film.
