I Ask Permission From The Land is a 25-minute performative reading built around a letter written to the artist’s grandfather during her first visit to Balochistan, her ancestral homeland. Moving through landscape and encounter, the work traces what it feels like to arrive somewhere both deeply familiar and entirely new, within a region marked by long-standing political marginalization.
The piece does not frame return as resolution. It holds the tension: the desire to belong alongside genuine uncertainty about whether one fits; inherited connection alongside lived distance. Visual projections of landscapes, textures, and documentary fragments run parallel to the reading, forming a quiet archive of presence and absence. The “permission” in the title is not rhetorical. It is an ethical proposition: how to stand within a contested geography with accountability, how to speak from within political precarity without flattening collective struggle into personal narrative.
